JOSHUA TREE ADVENTURE PART III
After the two good friends finished laughing at Eva's hilarious Boulder stew joke, Steve started to cry.
"Steve, what's wrong?" said Eva, always ready to help since she was Steve's good friend.
"Eva!" said Steve through the sobs, "This sunburn hurts so much... I don't know if I can make it... You should go on... without....me.... Or....We'll....both....die.....in...this..... bla......bla.....blasted heat!!!"
Eva looked up at the boiling hot sun a million miles up, in the sky. And she looked south, across the desert. Already she could see wavy heat distortions above the ground. "CAW!" Eva heard, and looked over at a nearby tree. A vulture sat on it evily, it's long black tongue licking its chops, hungry for Steve's chunky corpse. And what was that it the distance? Another mirage, or was it the tail of the coyote hiding behind a boulder? Eva and Steve, Eva realized, had no more powerbars to slake the hungry of the desert beast. They had only.... blood.
"Eva!" said Steve. "You've... got... to... get... out of here!....Just... leave... me.... to die...."
That settled it for Eva. There was no way she was leaving her dehydrated, sun-burned buddy to die at this remote campsite somewhere near Joshua Tree. No matter how much he asked. Eva knew a lot-- about movies, the theatre world, spanish, beauty tips. But if there was only one thing she knew it was this: how to be a good friend. And being a good friend doesn't mean letting friends get eaten by coyotes and vultures. At least not today.
"Eva!"... choked Steve, the skin on his face peeling off in layers a quarter of an inch thick, his tongue thick and black, his hands and feet spasming with pain and hunger again and again and again, "Go! Go you bitch...or we both die....please...it's bad enough I'm dying...I can't be the one...to kill...a friend... as good... as...you...are...to....me........ ..Eva..."
Eva was touched-- by asking her to leave Steve was being as good a friend as ever. Wow. But Eva knew what she had to do. And she had to do it right-- if she failed the hilarious boulder stew joke might be the last joke either of them ever made. "Steve!" she shouted loudly. "Stop crying! You're wasting valuable moisture in the your tears!" Steve immediately stopped crying, realizing just how right Eva was. And with no tears, Steve could suddenly see-- see a plant he had not noticed as he fought the terrible pain. It was the most famous of desert succulents-- the aloe vera plant.
"Eva!" shouted Steve, "We can do it! Just hand me part of that plant!"
Steve's good friend looked at him like he was crazy. "We don't have time for any silly plants," she said. "We've got to get you to the oasis!"
"Eva!" said Steve. "You're just...gonna... have to trust me about this."
Part of friendship is about trust, and in a friendship like Steve and Eva's trust plays a major role. Eva handed him the plant, and to her amazement Steve broke it apart and started rubbing the oozing plant sap all over his red, sunburned body.
"Eva!" Steve said, delighted, "It's working! It's working!" Steve could feel the sootthing and healing powers of the plant
lessening the effects of his terrible sun burn. Now he knew he could make it.
And taking one look at her friend's confident smile, Eva knew they'd both make it.

This just goes to show that some friendships are more powerful than anything mother nature can do to destroy them. Rock on, Steva.

Steva should know -- another good cure for the common sunburn is the juice of one lemon mixed with butter. I once applied this to quite a nasty burn and boy was I happy in the long run!!!
Wow- Steve Unckles and Eva Anderson are friendship powerhouses of the highest order--level twelve, minumum.
Maybe more.
I think Steva should go on a running trip next-- I love to run and I think Steve would too.
